About the Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours)
Build a career helping others with La Trobe's Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours). Develop your professional practice at Australia's largest rural health school and be ready to practice after just five years in this accredited Honours degree.
Understand the foundations of dental science and get hands-on experience in clinical placements across regional Victoria. You'll treat patients under the supervision of experienced clinicians and work to improve oral health through prevention, education and clinical care.
If you'd like to explore further research and develop a specialisation, you can also complete a community-based project or research project, which can lead to a doctorate.
You'll learn:
Preclinical oral health
Develop your knowledge of preventive, periodontal and restorative procedures. On graduation, you'll be competent in basic preclinical skills including dental materials, infection control, OH&S, instrumentation and dental procedures.
Medicine for dentistry
Learn to take a comprehensive medical history and understand its role in safe oral healthcare. Understand how therapeutic drugs are used to manage medical conditions.

Subject prerequisites
Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL.
English language requirement
IELTS is the only English Proficiency test accepted for entry into this course.
7.0 IELTS (Academic) with no individual band less than 7.0.

Demonstrate advanced knowledge and clinical skills in accordance with the Australian Dental Council's Professional Competencies of the Newly Qualified Dentist
Communicate and engage with patients, their families and other health professionals in a professional and responsible manner
Appraise and apply legal, ethical and professional responsibilities of a practicing dentist
Critically evaluate dental practice and current research to ensure an evidence based approach to dental practice
Evaluate appropriate strategies for oral disease prevention, health maintenance and health promotion and apply them to individuals and diverse communities
Perform a comprehensive clinical examination including special tests to effect a diagnosis and appropriate management plan including appropriate referral in complex situations
Provide effective and appropriate management of patients, independently and in collaboration with other healthcare professionals
