By completing La Trobe's Juris Doctor, you'll:
build a solid foundation in legal theory, research, and practice
develop the professional skills of a practicing lawyer, including client interviews, negotiation and mediation, advocacy, and legal drafting

Academic entry requirement
Prerequisites
Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent).
An Australian Bachelor's degree in any discipline or approved equivalent qualification with at least a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.5 on a 7-point scale meets the requirements to be considered for an offer.
OR
An Australian Bachelor's degree in any discipline or approved equivalent qualification with at least a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5 on a 7-point scale and a personal statement will be considered for an offer. The personal statement should address reasons for seeking to study law, relevant employment experience, relevant skills to enable the student to study law, and evidence of contribution to the community.
English language requirement
6.5 IELTS (Academic) with no individual band less than 6.0.
OR
An Australian or equivalent Bachelor's degree (completed within 8 years prior to application for admission) with a minimum GPA of 4 on a 7-point scale and the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) score of at least 150. The LSAT score must have been taken within 5 years prior to application for admission. If the LSAT has been taken multiple times within this 5-year period, only the highest score will be considered.
Juris Doctor intended learning outcomes
Demonstrate appropriate understanding and competence in the prescribed areas of knowledge required for admission into the legal practice in Victoria, Australia
Demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of legal knowledge that includes the fundamental areas of legal knowledge, the Australian legal system and underlying principles and concepts, including international and comparative contexts
Demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of the broader contexts within which legal issues arise including the principles and values of justice, ethical practice in lawyers' roles and contemporary developments in law, and its professional practice
Demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of approaches to ethical decision making and an ability to recognise and reflect upon, and a developing ability to respond to ethical issues likely to arise in professional contexts
Demonstrate an ability to recognise and reflect upon the professional responsibilities of lawyers in promoting justice and appropriate dispute resolution and in service to the community
Demonstrate sophisticated cognitive and creative skills, including an ability to identify and articulate complex legal issues and apply legal reasoning and research to generate appropriate jurisprudential and practical responses to legal issues
Demonstrate the intellectual and practical skills needed to justify and interpret theoretical propositions, legal methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions, as well as to identify, research, evaluate and synthesise relevant factual, legal and policy issues
Communicate in ways that are effective, appropriate and persuasive for legal and non-legal audiences and collaborate effectively in teams
Learn and work with a high level of autonomy, accountability and professionalism and adopt a reflective approach to their own capabilities and performance
