By completing La Trobe's Master of Nursing, you will:
learn to effectively plan, implement and evaluate practice in your specialised context, make high-level independent judgements, and function effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team
benefit from a flexible, blended learning approach that offers face-to-face or fully online study options that you can fit around your work commitments
choose from clinical specialisations in acute care, cardiac care, critical care, medical imaging, neonatal care, neonatal special care, and perioperative practices; or non-clinical specialisations in health management, leadership or public health
explore the introduction to nursing in the Australian context, including an understanding of professional standards and the healthcare organisational system
investigate legal and ethical issues pertinent to nursing practice.
Academic entry requirement
Prerequisites
Applicants must be a Division 1 Registered Nurse and hold a current practising certificate with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). This does not apply to International applicants.
Successful completion of a recognised Nursing degree (equivalent to an Australian Bachelors degree).
Applicants for the clinical specialisations and pathways must be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and employed in the relevant clinical specialist area or an approved agency, or have applied to the agency to undertake your clinical placement at the time of applying for the course. In the latter case, an offer into the course will be conditional upon confirmation of the clinical placement. Applicants with a relevant Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma do not need to provide a workplace statement outlining clinical placement approval.
Clinical specialisations and pathways are not available to international applicants.

Applicants with an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline or related area will receive credit of up to 60 credit points.
The following subjects will be credited as advanced standing for cognate students:
NSM4CNE CRITICAL NURSING ESSENTIALS
NSM4001 ADVANCED HEALTH ASSESSMENT
30 credit points of LTU5YLC
Applicants with an Australian Postgraduate degree (or equivalent) or an Australian Honours degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline or related area may be eligible to receive credit of up to 120 credit points, including the subjects listed above.
Applicants with over 2 years of relevant work experience may be eligible to receive credit of up to 60 credit points
English language requirement
6.5 IELTS (Academic) with no individual band less than 6.0.

Critically reflect on theory and scholarship, adapting established theories and current evidence to inform knowledge and professional practice.
Defend scholarship and knowledge in a range of contexts for research and clinical practice to optimise population and care outcomes
Formulate research principles and methods to execute evidence-based scholarship.
Master of Nursing career opportunities
Depending on your specialisation, you could be eligible for a range of clinical or non-clinical healthcare roles, including:
acute, cardiac, critical, medical imaging, perioperative practice or neonatal care nurse
clinical nurse manager
clinical nurse specialist
director of nursing or chief nursing officer
nurse educator
nurse researcher.
Estimated fees per year (2025):
A$35 000 per 120 credit points.
Note: 120 credit points represents full-time study for one year.

Destination Australia – an Australian Government initiative
The Destination Australia scheme supports new international students to study in regional Australia and offers students a high-quality learning experience. For eligible applicants, these scholarships are worth up to A$15 000 per annum for up to four years.
