Nepal has officially joined the top ten countries sending students to American universities, according to the 2024 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange. For the 2023/24 academic year, a total of 16,742 Nepali students were enrolled in US colleges, representing a 10.9% increase over the previous year. This achievement demonstrates Nepal's expanding position in global education, as well as its students' growing desire to pursue academic opportunities overseas.
The report, published yearly by the Institute of International Education (IIE) with support from the United States Department of State, contains detailed information about international students in the United States and American students studying abroad. In the previous year, international student enrolment in the United States hit a record high of 1,126,690 students, representing a 6.6% rise. Math and computer science, engineering, and business are among the topics of study that appeal to these pupils, as they are also popular among Nepali students.
The growing number of Nepali students choosing the United States is indicative of a broader trend. As globalization continues to shape education, young Nepalis increasingly view international study as a pathway to personal growth, advanced skills, and better career prospects. The United States remains one of the most sought-after destinations due to its high-quality education system, diverse learning environments, and extensive career opportunities post-graduation.
In addition to fostering cross-cultural understanding and academic collaboration, international students significantly contribute to the U.S. economy. For the 2023/24 period, the economic impact of international education was measured in billions, with Nepali students playing a meaningful role in this contribution.
Nepal’s inclusion in the top 10 list marks a milestone for the country and highlights the aspirations of its youth to access world-class education. It also underscores the importance of investing in global education systems and building international partnerships to benefit both students and academic institutions worldwide.
