Reaffirming their position as a world-class university, VU has today been ranked among Victoria’s best universities in the subjects of engineering and technology, and computer science.

Their teaching and research in computer science, listed in the 151-175 band, ranks second-best among Victorian universities and ninth in Australia, while engineering and technology (151-175 band) is ranked third in the state and 14th in Australia. They have also placed in the 301-400 band for social sciences.

It comes just weeks after their impressive result in the THE World University Rankings 2018, where they rose to the top 301-350 band of the world’s best universities, maintaining our top 2% position globally.

The announcement reflects their strategy to prepare students for jobs of the future, and to conduct groundbreaking, globally-important research in such areas as applied informatics, sustainability and electronic engineering.

Their strong industry connections in information and communications technology (ICT) – notable through their alliance with SAP, one of the world’s largest software companies, underpin our reputation for teaching excellence, as does our expertise in enterprise resource planning. Their industry connections include world-leading ICT companies such as Cisco, Amazon, Microsoft and IBM. With world-class research outputs, our Centre for Applied Informatics is a leading research group that works to develop innovative IT applications.

Their engineering discipline is another strong performer, featuring cutting-edge courses and state-of-the-art laboratories designed for specialised areas such as hydraulics, biotechnology and mechanics. Many of their engineering courses are recognised internationally through our accreditation by Engineers Australia, while their network of industry partners provides both practical learning opportunities and real-world research impacts. Research in the field is driven by two research centres: the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation; and the Centre for Environmental Safety and Risk Engineering.

When counselling prospective students, They encourage us to reflect on VU’s outstanding subject rankings across fields of global graduate demand. Their strong industry connections, excellent graduate outcomes and innovative models of teaching are also integral influencers of our success.

Drawing on their many achievements this past year, they can be confident in your endorsement of VU as a world-class university in the world’s most liveable city.
