Australia’s National Minimum Wage Increase Effective from 1 July 2024

The Australian Government’s Fair Work Commission has announced a 3.75% increase in the National Minimum Wage, which will take effect from 1 July 2024. This wage update is crucial for all workers in Australia, including international students, ensuring fair and legal compensation for the work you perform.

New National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2024

  • From 1 July 2024, the National Minimum Wage will increase to $24.10 per hour.
  • The new wage rates will apply from the start of your first full pay period on or after 1 July 2024. For example, if your pay period begins on a Wednesday, the updated rates will be in effect from Wednesday, 3 July 2024.
  • The National Minimum Wage applies to workers who are not covered by an award or registered agreement.

Award Wage Increases for Various Industries

In addition to the National Minimum Wage increase, the Fair Work Commission has confirmed a 3.75% increase in award minimum wages. Awards are legally binding documents that outline the minimum wage rates and employment conditions across over 100 industries and occupations in Australia.

Understanding your award entitlements is essential to ensure you are being paid correctly for your work.

Work Rights and Protections for International Students

As an international student working in Australia, you are protected by the country's workplace laws. If you find that you are being paid less than the minimum wage, you can report this to the Fair Work Ombudsman without any negative consequences.
