The Australian Government has officially replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement with the Genuine Student (GS) Requirement for all Student visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024. This significant change aims to enhance clarity and transparency in the visa application process.
The Genuine Student (GS) Requirement is a key component in the Student visa application process. It ensures that all visa applicants are genuinely coming to Australia with the primary purpose of studying. The GS requirement focuses on applicants demonstrating their intent to gain skills that align with Australia’s needs and their commitment to education.
The GS Requirement introduces a set of specific, targeted questions in place of the previous GTE statement. All Student visa applicants must now provide detailed answers in English (up to 150 words per question) addressing the following:
Applicants who previously held a Student visa or are lodging a visa application while on a non-Student visa will be required to answer an additional question.
To support their visa applications, applicants are encouraged to include:
The GS criterion is based on assessing the applicant’s genuine intention to study in Australia. Factors such as the applicant's circumstances, immigration history, visa compliance, and personal situation in their home country will all be considered during the assessment.
The Genuine Student (GS) Requirement applies to all Student visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024. Applications submitted before this date will continue to be assessed under the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Requirement.
